SCHOOL NEWS

GTNA School Supply Drive to Benefit our Falk Elementary Students!

What a success!

Greentree neighbors came through and donated $1,443 in cash and many purchased backpacks and supplies for our Falk School students! Thank you! The GTNA realized this need when a sobering statistic was considered: over 70% of students at Falk School come from families who qualify for free-or-reduced-cost school lunch. Falk’s supply list for just one 1st Grade student costs over $40 - and when family finances are stretched, school supplies may not be affordable!

Special thanks to Nancy Godfrey, Chuck and Val Kime, and Diane Sullivan for being drop-off sites for donations!

Even though the formal drive is over for this year, Falk School accepts donations at any time, and your donation qualifies as a charitable donation on your taxes! Make checks out to  “Falk Elementary School” and write “school supply drive” in memo line. Mail/bring to:  Principal Lynn Winn, Falk Elementary School, 6323 Woodington Way, Madison, WI 53711

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers Needed at Falk Elementary

Ever been interested in working with children? Well, here is your chance! Falk Elementary is looking for both one-on-one tutors and classroom helpers during the school day. The Schools of Hope program was developed solely to assist children in their studies. This opportunity will allow you to help a child improve his/her writing, reading, and/or math skills.

Melanie Weast is the new Schools of Hope AmeriCorps Tutor Coordinator at Falk Elementary. Originally from Durham, North Carolina, Melanie moved to Madison to work with the Schools of Hope program. She graduated this past May from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.
Contact Melanie at mweast@schoolsofhope.org or 204-0479. You can get a copy of the tutor application form in the Falk Office, or HERE.

Tutoring at Falk Elementary After-school Academic Clubs for Excellence (AACE)

We Need Your Help! Come work with students in grades 1-5 in an after-school setting!  We need volunteers for literacy and math tutoring as well as homework help.  Volunteers will work with students in small groups or one-on-one to develop their reading and writing skills, practice math facts and problem solving strategies, complete homework assignments from the school day, and more.

At Falk Elementary School, 6326 Woodington Way:  Mondays between 1:00pm and 5:00pm and Tuesday-Friday between 2:30pm and 5:00pm

Even one hour per week would be very helpful! Contact Erica Dorsch, AmeriCorps Member and CLC Volunteer Coordinator at echristie@madison.k12.wi.us or 608-204-2207

Tutors Needed at Jefferson Middle School

Jefferson Middle School is always looking for tutors, mentors, etc. Their coordinator for tutors is Layne Hammond-Champion, and she can be reached at 663-6427.
