SCHOOL NEWS

Provide Hope - Become a Tutor

Minetta Koblings, AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator at Falk & Huegel elementary schools, seeks literacy and math volunteers. AmeriCorps and the Schools of Hope Project are proud to be working for Falk and Huegel-as well as 29 other area schools and community centers-this year to provide one-on-one and one-on-two tutoring to children struggling with math and literacy. The project’s primary goal is to increase math and literacy skills in kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students while closing the achievement gap between students of color and their white peers.

The Schools of Hope Project is eager to recruit and place volunteers from our neighborhood at either of these schools. Approximately 775 children spend their time learning and growing at Falk and Huegel daily; unfortunately, more than 50% of those children come from families with limited resources. With your help, students can get the extra help they need in the form of individual attention and tutoring in two very important skill areas.

If you would like to volunteer, contact Minetta at Falk Elementary: 204-2157, Huegel Elementary: 204-3120, or at rnkoblings@madison.k12.wi.us

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Volunteers Needed at Falk Elementary

You can help our kids learn, and also help them feel cared-for by our community, by volunteering at Falk. We have a Vista volunteer this year to help coordinate volunteer work at Falk. Her name is Kaitlin Gaynor. Contact her by phone at 204-2207.

Hobbyists: The after-school program is putting together after-school activities for the remainder of this school year. Do you have an interest you might share with Falk students? Perhaps you know how to knit, or dance, or speak a foreign language. A staff member will be with you to take care of discipline and administrative duties. Call Beth in Safe Haven (our on-site after-school program) at 204-2208 to discuss the possibilities.

Tutors Needed at Toki Middle School

Strengthen your community by becoming a Schools of Hope tutor at Toki Middle School!

Tutors will work with a student one-to-one on homework and class projects, as well as practice general study and organizational skills to promote academic success. Tutors are most frequently asked to provide extra support in math and literacy, though need varies with each students.

We do our best to consider tutor strengths and student needs when creating a match. It is not necessary that tutors be math or literacy experts to provide a real service. Much of the success of a match depends on the tutor-student relationship. Knowing that someone has taken an active interest in their academic performance positively affects a student’s attitude towards school, which encourages them to think about their own school success.

Tutors are asked to make a semester long commit of at least one hour a week either during or after school. Days and times are dependent on your schedule; however possible times are between 7:30am-3:30pm Monday-Thursday, and 7:30am-2:30pm on Fridays. Tutoring will be done at Toki.

For more information or to apply, please contact Anna Weidemann (anna@chdc.us) or Ariana Hauck (ahauck@ulgm.org) at (608) 204-4763. An application can be downloaded from the Urban League website (www.ulgm.org).

Tutors Needed at Jefferson Middle School

Jefferson Middle School is always looking for tutors, mentors, etc. Their coordinator for tutors is Layne Hammond-Champion, and she can be reached at 663-6427.
