ANNUAL EVENTS BROUGHT TO YOU BY GTNAThe events sponsored by the Greentree Neighborhood Organization are designed to build community, foster relationships with neighbors, but mostly - to have FUN! Here is a summary calendar of our annual events: February: Adults-Only PartyThe “Adults only” Greentree Gathering was held at Babe's in 2009 - it was a great way to meet the neighbors and have some fun! Watch for information about the 2010 gathering in the December issue of the "Stump" (and leave those kids home - who says children get to have all the fun!?!) and hope to see You there! Spring: GTNA Neighbors Forum/Annual MeetingPast invited speakers have included representatives from the police, fire and transportation departments, local utilities and candidates for office. It's a great opportunity to find out what is going on in the community, and to also socialize with your neighbors. Watch for details in the December "Stump" newsletter. April: Earth Day ChallengeEvery year Greentree joins in on the City-Wide Earth Day Challenge - - a city-wide trash clean-up event. Last year approximately 1700 volunteers from neighborhood associations, scout troops, local businesses and student organizations from the UW and area high schools cleaned up trash in 75 Madison parks and surrounding communities! Targeted areas within the Greentree Neighborhood are Falk School/Hammersley Park, Norman Clayton Park and Greentree Park, as well as our streets and sidewalks. The city provides bags; all we provide is the enthusiasm. The city will pick up bags curbside at the parks or with the regular trash. Watch for more details in the February "Stump" Newsletter. May: Annual Garage SaleThe Annual Greentree Neighborhood Garage Sale is typically held the second weekend in May, from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm Friday and Saturday. GTNA will place an ad in the Wisconsin State Journal advertising a “neighborhood-wide” garage sale and will post signs at entry points to the neighborhood from bordering streets. Past sale coordinators have also compiled a neighborhood map showing the location of all the sales. Watch for more details in the February "Stump" Newsletter. June: Garden Club EventThe Greentree Garden Club and the Greentree Neighborhood Association have co-sponsored events in June for the past two years. In 2007 a garden tour, exclusively for Greentree residents, was held. Tour guides and some home owners shared their gardening experiences and know-how with tour participants. Professional gardeners were also on hand to answer questions and explain how they helped guide the development of the tour garden. In 2008 the Garden Club held a plant sale, where club members thinned their beautiful gardens and offered the "extras" for sale to other neighbors. What will 2009 bring? Watch your "Stump" newsletter to find out! July: 4th of July Picnic Gallop/Parade/PicnicIt's the biggest event in the Greentree year! We pull out all the stops for July 4 and all the neighbors and invited to come on out and enjoy the fun! The Race is ON!The July 4th GREENTREE GALLOP is a two-mile fun run/walk. The course winds all through Greentree Neighborhood and is well-marked and safe. Come out to run or walk, or just step outside your door in the morning to cheer on the runners and show your support. The event is fun for everyone from the serious runner to the fifth grader running into middle school to the walker with a baby stroller. Fast or slow, young or old, come out for the fun!! Ribbons are awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place men and women (and boys and girls!) in their age brackets, and trophies to the overall male and female winners. And did we mention the cool t-shirt for all participants? It’s Not the 4th Without a Parade!Bring your families, wagons, bikes, strollers, anything on wheels…all decorated to celebrate the spirit of July Fourth! Paraders will assemble at Falk Elementary at 11:00 am. The “Best of” each category will receive a gift certificate. EVERY child participating in the parade will receive one food ticket (worth 25 cents) toward the purchase of a food item. The parade goes from Falk School to Norman Clayton Park. Eats and Treats! The Fourth of July picnic will start right after the parade at 11:30 am. Buy food tickets for the hot dogs and brats along with chips, soda and ice cream sandwiches! Relax and enjoy catching up with your neighbors. Games for the kids and entertainment as well. It’s a great time! October: Halloween BonfireOn October 31, after you and the kids wrap up trick or treating from 5-7 p.m. please come join us at Norman Clayton Park, located between Piping Rock Road and Shoreham Drive, from 7-9 p.m. Savor hot chocolate around the bonfire and visit with your friends and neighbors while the kids run around in their costumes in the dark! November: Roller Skating PartyThis annual event is held the evening before Falk’s teacher conference day when school is out, so kids can stay out late and skate the night away. Watch for the October "Stump" for more details. December: Santa VisitsThe Greentree Neighborhood Association’s “Visits with Santa” usually take place the second week in December. Santa will appear at your door with candy cane treats for the kids, and review his list of “Good Little Boys and Girls” during his visit. That evening, Santa’s driver will have his cell phone handy and call you about 5 minutes before Santa’s arrival. This will help Santa get onto your front porch before eager eyes see him getting out of a van instead of a sleigh! It’s a Kodak moment, so have your camera ready. Information on how to schedule a visit with your family will be included in the October and December "Stump" newsletters.
